GEO Content Doesn't Look Like a Blog Post

Explore how John Lewis's innovative approach to GEO content reshapes engagement and AI visibility, moving beyond conventional SEO tactics.

A 162-year-old retailer just made one of the most useful GEO moves of the year. They did not publish a white paper on generative engine optimization. They did not stuff another FAQ into a product page. They launched a YouTube chat show — and built a content studio inside the shop to keep making it.

That is the lesson most SEO teams will miss, because it does not look like Google SEO work.

TL;DR: Generative engine optimization is not "SEO, but for ChatGPT." AI engines recommend what they can quote: named people, third-party conversation, stories with products inside them. John Lewis built that on purpose. The Gift List vodcast and The Box Studio on Oxford Street are Answer Assets that talk. Stop producing more pages for Google. Start producing conversations models can cite.

I am James, CEO of Mercury Technology Solutions. From Hong Kong — 9 September 2026. We audit brands for AI search visibility across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. The pattern that keeps showing up: the page is optimized, the entity is thin, and the AI model has nothing human to retrieve. John Lewis just spent real money on the opposite problem.

John Lewis, founded 1864, opened The Box Studio inside the Oxford Street store. Not a campaign set. An always-on room for video, social, and creator content — built into selling space so they can respond to a trend or a launch in hours, not weeks.

The first series out of that room is Gift List, a vodcast hosted by Angela Scanlon. Episode one: Louis Theroux, talking about gifts that went right and gifts that went wrong. Six episodes, one every three weeks, through Christmas. YouTube, the John Lewis site, Spotify, Apple Podcasts. Creators including Daisy May Cooper, Tom Davis and Stephen Libby have already filmed there.

Anna Braithwaite, their chief customer officer, said the quiet part: they have spent nearly twenty years proving people will choose to watch a John Lewis Christmas ad. What they could not do, until now, was do it all year, at the speed social actually moves. And then this, which is the GEO sentence hiding inside a retail quote:

"Customers have trusted John Lewis for a very long time, and that is worth more in this channel than any amount of production."

Trust as the production value. That is not a media line. That is an AI-citation strategy.

This is GEO. They just didn't call it that.

Outgoing MD Peter Ruis put numbers on the shift: AI-driven product searches inside John Lewis rose from 0.3% to 2.5% of customer activity in a year. Shoppers are asking ChatGPT and Gemini for third-party recommendations. The retailer's own reporting says their fastest-growing channels are now digital assistants and social platforms, not traditional search. Sixty percent of sales already come from online. A growing share of first product encounters happen on video.

Read that again. The discovery layer moved off Google's ten blue links and into conversations. The old SEO reflex is: write the page the query wants. The GEO reflex is: become the source the AI model wants to quote when it answers.

AI engines do not prefer your PDP. They prefer a named human, on a trusted surface, telling a story in which your product is incidental and therefore believable. Gift List is not a product demo. It is a talk show about gifting. John Lewis is the room the conversation happens in. That is how you get cited without sounding like an ad — and ads are exactly what models learn to discount.

Sister brand Waitrose already proved the format with the Dish podcast. John Lewis copied the mechanic and put a studio under it so the format does not die when the campaign calendar does.

Think of it as occupying the chokepoint instead of laying siege to the old castle. You can keep polishing category pages for Google. Or you can stand where the new traffic actually forms: inside the answer.

What GEO content can actually look like

Most GEO programmes still look like 2019 content mills with a new acronym. More blogs. More FAQs. More "ultimate guides." That work is not useless — Method A in our audits still needs corroboratable claims on your own domain. But it is the floor, not the move.

The move is a Conversation Asset. A piece of media with four properties AI models can use:

  1. A named person. Scanlon. Theroux. A creator with a face and a track record. AI cites people more readily than it cites product SKUs. (We have been saying this as Creator SEO: the model trusts a judgment, not a URL.)

  2. A third-party shape. A chat show is not a brand blog. The format itself borrows citation authority from "this is a conversation," which is the surface type retrieval already likes.

  3. A buyer question, not a brand slogan. "What makes a gift land?" is a real query. "Shop the John Lewis gifting edit" is a merchandising line. Only one of those gets retrieved.

  4. Speed. The Box Studio's point is hours, not quarters. Stale answers are how you grow Truth Debt. A studio inside the store is an anti-staleness machine.

None of that requires you to be a 162-year-old retailer with an £800 million shop-and-digital programme. It requires you to stop confusing owned pages with citable evidence.

The expensive SEO mistake

Here is what I keep seeing in enterprise GEO decks: a keyword list, a cluster of articles, a schema checklist, a promise that ChatGPT will start naming you. Then the audit lands. The pages exist. The model still recommends a YouTuber, a journalist, or a competitor who got interviewed on someone else's show. That is not a digital transformation programme. That is search engine optimization theatre with a new acronym.

Why? Because the content was built for ranking, not for quoting. Ranking is a Google problem. Quoting is an AI problem. SEO still matters for crawlability. GEO is the layer that decides whether a generative engine has anything worth repeating.

John Lewis already had the Christmas ad — the most expensive branded film in British retail. They still built a chat show. They understood the ad trains feeling. The show trains evidence. AI models cannot cite a tearjerker. They can cite Theroux admitting he tried to steal a silver spoon from Joan Collins.

That is the reframe:

Stop writing pages that describe you. Start producing conversations other people would have anyway — in a room you own.

How to build GEO content this quarter

If you run SEO, content, or brand in a company that still thinks GEO means "more blog posts," run this instead:

Pick the conversation, not the keyword. What do buyers already talk about in your category when they are not trying to buy? Gifting. Implementation horror stories. The thing that broke. The gift that landed. That is your show.

Put a named human in the room. A presenter, a practitioner, a customer who will say the unsayable "avoid if" out loud. AI models reward the honesty your brand page will never publish.

Build a small studio, not a big campaign. A repeatable room — even a standing Zoom format with a transcript, chapters, and a clip machine — beats one hero film. The asset is the cadence.

Measure citations of the conversation, not sessions on the PDP. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude the open buyer question. Did they quote your person, your story, your product-in-context? If they quoted a comparison site instead, you still do not have a Conversation Asset. You have a page.

The 162-year-old retailer did not wait for a GEO agency to invent a format. They looked at where discovery actually moved — digital assistants, social, video — and built a factory for the kind of content those surfaces already reward.

GEO content can look like a chat show. Sometimes that is exactly what it should look like.

What is GEO content if it isn't a blog post?

GEO content is any asset a generative AI engine — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity — can quote as evidence — a named person, a third-party conversation, a story with the product inside it. A blog post can be that. Most are not. The test is simple: would ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Claude cite the conversation, or only the URL?

Why does a YouTube show beat another SEO page?

Because ranking is a Google problem and quoting is an AI problem. Traditional SEO still matters for crawlability. Generative engine optimization decides whether the model has anything worth repeating. John Lewis already had the Christmas ad. They still built Gift List, because the ad trains feeling and the show trains evidence.

Stop writing pages that describe you. Start producing conversations other people would have anyway — in a room you own. That is GEO. That is also SEvO: YouTube, podcasts, digital assistants, not just the ten blue links.
