The Hong Kong AI Overview Study: We Tested 60 Keywords, and the Average Is the Least Useful Number

TL;DR: We tested 60 Hong Kong keywords with SERP snapshots dated 1 June–10 August 2026. 41 returned a Google AI Overview — 68.3% of all 60, or 74.5% of the 55 with a usable SERP record. We report both ends because five keywords came back with no usable data, and we'd rather show the range than pick the flattering end. The real finding isn't the average: sector variance (100% of insurance keywords vs zero on the biggest property terms) is wider than the headline range. The only way to know your exposure is to check your own keywords. This is the GEO measurement baseline every Hong Kong SEO budget should start from.

I am Akira. We ran this study for an unglamorous reason: we couldn't find published Hong Kong-specific AI Overview triggering data anywhere. The figures in circulation — 20.5% of SERPs, 7.9% of local searches — come from Ahrefs' 146-million-SERP global analysis, which has no Hong Kong cut. We were tired of quoting numbers to Hong Kong clients as if they described this market. Sixty keywords isn't a market either. But it is Hong Kong — and for SEO planning in this market, global averages hide local exposure.

Method: How We Tested

We read the serp_features field from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer (country=hk) for each keyword — no eyeballing 60 SERPs. Three mechanical classifications:

  • Triggeredserp_features contains ai_overview
  • Not triggered — SERP checked, fields populated, no ai_overview
  • No data — empty or stale record. Missing data is not evidence of absence, so these five get their own denominator.

The keyword set had two layers: 20 AI-search and digital marketing queries (the language our industry actually uses), plus 40 commercial keywords across eight industries — to see whether AI Overviews behave differently outside marketing. Snapshots span June 1 to August 10, 2026; this is a snapshot of a moving feature, not a permanent measurement. The raw keyword list is available on request.

Result 1: Between 68% and 75% of Tested Queries Returned an AI Overview

| Count | Keywords | |---|---| | Tested | 60 | | AI Overview present | 41 | | No AI Overview | 14 | | No usable SERP record | 5 | | Rate, excluding no-data (n=55) | 74.5% | | Rate, no-data counted as non-trigger (n=60) | 68.3% |

Why a range? Promoting only 74.5% makes a dramatic headline and hides a research limitation. Neither figure is a statistical bound — they're the two defensible treatments of missing data. (The arithmetic ceiling, all five triggering, would be 76.7%.) Either way: an AI-generated answer sat above the organic results on most Hong Kong queries we tested. For Hong Kong SEO, the Google AI Overview is now the first result — whatever the rankings say.

Result 2: Your Clients' Categories Are Further Along Than Ours

This one surprised us. Marketing and AI-search terms triggered at 62.5% (10 of 16 verifiable). Cross-industry commercial terms triggered at 79.5% (31 of 39). If you work in marketing but serve clients in other sectors, your clients may already be more exposed than you are.

All five insurance keywords we tested — 旅遊保險, 危疾保險, 人壽保險, 醫療保險, 汽車保險 — returned an AI Overview. Five of five is a pointer, not a sector rate, but it's five of five in the sector with the highest commercial stakes in the sample. Property ran the opposite way: 按揭計算機 (25,000 monthly searches) and 物業估價 (11,000) returned no SERP features at all — consistent with Ahrefs' global finding that real estate is among the lowest-triggering categories at 5.8%.

That spread is wider than the headline range. The average is the least useful figure on this page.

Result 3: A Local Pack Is Not a Shield

Seventeen keywords returned a local pack. Twelve of those also returned an AI Overview — 脊醫, 健身室, 國際學校, 補習社, 醫美, 瑜伽班, and others. The five that didn't — seo hong kong, seo agency hong kong, digital marketing agency hong kong, 中醫, 美容院 — are all provider-finding queries: the searcher wants a business, not an explanation.

美容院 (find a salon) showed no AI Overview; 醫美 (understand medical aesthetics) did. Same industry, different job, different SERP. The shortcut version — "we're a local business, AI Overviews don't affect us" — is a wrong reading of a correct statistic. The useful question isn't "do I get a map pack?" It's: how many of my keywords are people learning, and how many are people choosing? Only the second half is quiet, and for most Hong Kong service businesses it isn't the bigger half. This is where GEO citation tracking earns its keep: visibility measured per query intent, not per average.

Observation (Not a Result): Chinese Queries Triggered More Often

Chinese-language keywords triggered at 80.6% (29 of 36) against 63.2% (12 of 19) for English. We label this an observation because it doesn't survive scrutiny as a result: our Chinese keywords skew consumer, our English keywords skew B2B — language and topic are confounded by construction, and n=60 cannot separate them. A valid test needs matched translation pairs across identical categories, captured the same day. We haven't run it.

The one thing we'd act on: if you run a bilingual Hong Kong site, nothing here says the Chinese side is the safer one. That's a reason to measure it — not a reason to conclude anything. This is exactly why our Hong Kong SEO and GEO work treats English and Traditional Chinese as two research jobs, not a translation task.

Result 4: The Missing Data Is Itself a Finding

Four of the five keywords with no usable SERP record were emerging AI-search terms — "generative engine optimization," "answer engine optimization," "AI SEO tools," "AI Overview." The newest category in search is the one the measurement infrastructure tracks worst. If you're selling or buying GEO services in Hong Kong, you're operating in the least-measured corner of the market. That cuts both ways: less competition in the answers, less certainty in the dashboards.

The Seven Limits — Read These Before Quoting Us

  1. n=60. A sample, not a census.
  2. Third-party snapshot data, not live manual checks — reproducible beats precise.
  3. Keywords weren't all captured the same day.
  4. Each keyword measured once — nothing here says the rate is rising, only how high it already was.
  5. Sector cells are small (five insurance keywords is a pointer, not a rate).
  6. Language and topic are confounded in the bilingual comparison.
  7. Five keywords had no usable record, and they're clustered in one subgroup.

What To Do With This

Stop quoting global averages to Hong Kong budgets. Start with your own keyword set — whether you call the work AI SEO or GEO, the protocol is the same: baseline your keywords, then decide. The free GEO Scorecard gives you a first read on how AI cites your domain today; the GEO Audit turns it into a per-engine, per-language baseline in 48 hours. If you want to see what measured citation work looks like in this market, the Hong Kong GEO + AIO case studies are the proof, not the pitch.

Your average exposure is not 68%. It's whatever your keywords say it is. And AI Overviews are one surface — ChatGPT and Perplexity citations are others. The same baseline discipline applies across all of them. Measure your keywords.

FAQ

How often do AI Overviews appear in Hong Kong search results? In our 60-keyword sample from June–August 2026, between 68.3% and 74.5% of tested queries returned an AI Overview, depending on how five keywords with missing data are treated.

Does a local pack protect my business from AI Overviews? No. Twelve of 17 local-pack keywords in our sample also showed an AI Overview. What matters is the searcher's job: category-learning queries trigger them; provider-finding queries mostly don't.

Do Chinese or English keywords trigger more AI Overviews in Hong Kong? Chinese queries triggered more often in our sample (80.6% vs 63.2%), but language and topic were confounded by design — treat it as an observation worth measuring on your own keyword set, not a conclusion.
