When I was younger, society had a clear dividing line between reality and the "virtual" world. "Online dating" was for creeps. "Being a YouTuber" meant you were avoiding reality.
Today, if a business doesn't have a digital footprint, it doesn't exist. The "virtual" world became our concrete reality. But society hasn't fully grasped the terrifying flip side of this coin: Things we thought were "concrete" have quietly become virtual.
Take "Retiring at 65." Between inflation and shifting pension economics, it's a hallucination. Or take the ultimate concrete concept: The stable 9-to-5 job. I was speaking with a digital nomad recently. People constantly ask him, "Aren't you worried about your unstable income?" His reply was a bullet to the heart of corporate logic: "Isn't a salaried employee who can be fired with zero notice on a Tuesday afternoon infinitely more unstable?"
He is right. The "lifelong corporate career" is dead. But to survive what comes next, we have to unlearn the very advice that built the tech industry over the last twenty years.
1. Naval Was Half-Right: The Death of Code
For the last decade, Naval Ravikant’s framework was the Holy Grail for tech founders and solopreneurs:
"The newest and most democratic wealth leverages are products with no marginal cost of replication: media and code."
In 2018, this was absolute genius. If you learned to code, you had superpowers. You could write a script once, deploy it, and a million people could use it while you slept.
I need to issue a patch update to that philosophy. In 2026, half of that equation is dead. Code is no longer your leverage.
With models like Claude Opus 4.6 and local setups like OpenClaw, the creation of code now also has zero marginal cost. Code has become a commodity. It is just the "exhaust" that is produced when an AI translates a human's intent into machine action. When the machine can write the code faster, cheaper, and more securely than you can, your ability to write if/else loops is no longer a superpower. It is a bottleneck.
2. The Redefinition of a "Job"
If execution (like coding or manual data entry) is dead, what exactly is a job?
Jensen Huang (Nvidia) used radiologists as an example. When AI image recognition arrived, everyone thought 30 million radiologists would be unemployed. Instead, society now needs more AI-equipped radiologists.
Here is the difference that redefines work:
- If your job was "identifying pixels on an x-ray," you are unemployed. The machine does it better.
- If your job is "healing humans and communicating treatment plans," AI just became your ultimate weapon. You can process 100x more patients.
A job is no longer "executing a mechanical task for 8 hours." A job is now "taking responsibility for a human outcome, using AI as your lever."
3. The New Leverage Equation: Agents + Media
If you understand that a job is about outcomes, you realize you don't need a massive corporation to scale anymore. Welcome to the era of the One-Person Company. You are the CEO, and your employees are a swarm of AI bots.
Naval's formula must be updated for the AGI era: New Leverage = Agents + Media.
- Agents (The Execution Leverage): You no longer leverage a static piece of code; you leverage a dynamic, thinking Agent. It reads emails, decides on refunds, logs into Stripe, and writes apology letters. Your leverage is how many AI Agents you can successfully orchestrate toward a business goal.
- Media (The Trust Leverage): Notice that Naval's other half of the equation—Media—survived perfectly. While AI can write code flawlessly, it cannot replicate a human soul. Podcasts, writing, video, and physical presence—these are how you build Trust. AI generates the product, but your Media generates the Trust.
4. Why You Need "Ikigai" to Survive
If an AI can handle all the execution, what is your competitive advantage?
Here in Japan, we have a concept called Ikigai (生き甲斐)—your "Reason for Being." It is the intersection of what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can get paid for.
For the last 100 years, the Industrial Revolution forced us to ignore Ikigai. We worked like robots on assembly lines—both blue-collar and white-collar—just for the paycheck. AI just fired all the robots.
If you work like a zombie, doing tasks just for the sake of doing them, your career is over. AI is a better zombie than you. But machines do not have intent, empathy, or life experience.
- Doing things purely for traffic/money? An AI farm will out-clickbait you.
- Doing things with a genuine sense of mission? You become a magnet for human connection.
"Be yourself" is no longer a cheesy motivational quote; it is a strict economic imperative. No one can compete with you on being you.
Conclusion: Move Up the Abstraction Stack
The most delusional thing you can do right now is try to map out a traditional 30-year career path, or spend your evenings grinding through LeetCode to memorize JavaScript frameworks. You are memorizing the rules of a game that no longer exists.
The leverage has moved up the abstraction stack. Do not compete with the machine on syntax or mechanical execution. Compete on Vision, Taste, and Intent. Find your Ikigai. Build your One-Person Company. Command the machines.
